news_AWM="<center><img width=195 border=0 src='Rad.jpg'></center><br>Prof. Ami Radunskaya has been selected as the 2010 Etta Z. Falconer Lecturer to be held August 5-7, 2010 at <a href='http://www.maa.org/mathfest/' class=ablue>MathFest</a> in Pittsburgh.  Her selection by the <a href='http://www.awm-math.org' class=ablue>Association for Women in Mathematics</a>(AWM)was recently announced by Georgia Benkart, President of the AWM.  The Falconer Lecture is jointly sponsored by the AWM and the <a href='http://www.maa.org/' class=ablue>Mathematical Association of America</a> (MAA).  Dr. Benkart, says 'The Falconer Lecture is presented each summer to recognize women who have made distinguished and sustained contributions to the mathematical sciences or mathematics education.  Dr. Falconer worked tirelessly to encourage women and minorities to study and have careers in mathematics and science.  Her life and work remain a tremendous inspiration.  Through your impressive research, teaching, and service to the mathematical community, you have followed her rich tradition. news_Moscow="<center><img width=195 border=0 src='WF.jpg'></center><br>Will Fletcher '12, double-major in Math and Chemistry, is spending the 2009-2010 academic year <a href='pyramid.jpg' class=ablue>studying</a> at the <a href='http://www.mccme.ru/mathinmoscow' class=ablue>Math in Moscow</a> Program.  The main feature of this program follows the Russian tradition of teaching mathematics.  It focuses on the development of a creative approach to studying mathematics from the very outset. Not memorizing theorems and proofs, but discovering mathematics oneself under the guidance of an experienced teacher.  While in Moscow, Will is being supported by the <a href='http://www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.Cfm' 'class=ablue'>Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student</a> scholarship program. Let's give Will a hearty round of applause!";

Ami Radunskaya and Lisette de Pillis (HMC) is highlighted in the October 2009 SIAM News <a href='SIAM.Rad.pdf' class=ablue>Mathematics Meets Oncology and Immunology.</a>  Profs. Rad and de Pillis began their collaborative research about 10 years ago by working with a group of physicians, an almost unheard of collaboration.  This groundbreaking interdisciplinary research has spawned numerous talks and papers.  Congratulations Dr. Rad!"; 

news_Prizes="The 2008-09 Math Prizes were awarded Oct. 12 at Alumni House.  12 students were honored for their work in the academic year 2008-09.  The Jaeger, or frosh prize, was given to Max Strater, Allison Miller, Xinyi Guo, Ian Chang, Jessica Barry and Clara Fried.  The Bixby prize for outstanding work as a sophomore was presented to David di Tullio, Catherine Pelland, Will Fletcher and Daniel Poore.  Juniors receiving the Bruce Levy prize are Teddy Einstein and James Buerger.  Congratulations to All!";

news_Daigle="Gerald 'Jay' Daigle '08, was awarded a prestigious 3 year NSF graduate fellowship to begin his PhD studies in Mathematics at Cal Tech in Pasadena.  Jay recently returned from spending a year at Cambridge Univeristy in England studying for the Mathematical Tripos.  While an undergraduate at Pomona, Jay was a member of our award winning Dance team.";

The recipients of the Wig Awards are elected by the junior and senior classes and then confirmed by a committee of trustees, faculty and students. The awards were announced at Pomona's 116th Commencement held on May 17, 2009. The awards were established by Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Wig in 1955.";

news_Ilia="<center><img width=195 border=0 src='Ilia.small.jpg'></center><br>Ilia Mishev '01 received his PhD in Mathematics from Colorado University May 2009.  His research interests lie in special functions, wavelets, functional analysis and probability.  He is currently focusing on the area of special functions  which involves describing Coexeter group actions on Saalschutzian 4F3(1) and well-poised 7F6(1) hypergeometric series of unit argument.  He expects to teach at Colorado next fall while looking for an academic position.  Congratulations Ilia!";

news_NSF="<br>Emily Stark '09 and James Tener '08 both received the prestigious NSF Graduate Fellowship Awards.  Emily will be studying Topology at Tufts University next year while  James is in his second year at UC Berkeley graduate school studying Analysis. news_Chris="<br>Christopher DuBois 2006, a first-year PhD student in the Department of Statistics at University of California-Irvine, has been awarded a 3-year National Defense Science and Engineering <a href='https://ndseg.asee.org/about_ndseg' 'class=ablue'>(NDSEG)</a> Graduate Fellowship.   NDSEG Fellowships are awarded based on a national competition, with approximately 200 fellowships awarded each year in the United States to graduate students across a broad range of fields of study in the sciences and engineering. Chris will use his fellowship funding to pursue his PhD research on statistical modeling of large dynamic social networks, such as email communication networks between individuals, working with Professor Padhraic Smyth in the Departments of Computer Science and Statistics and Professor Carter Butts in the Department of Sociology. While at Pomona College, Chris worked with Professor Ami Radunskaya on modeling early tumor growth.";

She is currently working in the CAM program with Professor Moser on his work in turbulence flow. news_Putnam="<center><img width=195 border=0 src='2009-Poore.small.jpg'></center><br>Pomona's Putnam team made up of Daniel Poore '11 (pictured), Tim Carrell '09 and Chris Peterson '09 ranked 31st.  Daniel had the top Pomona score of 40.9.  The Putnam is an international competition held one Saturday in December.  This year there were 3627 participants from 545 institutions.  Other participants were Madeline Wyse '11, Andrew Dugowson '11, Minsoo Kim '10, Paul Salerno '09, Naneh Apkarian '10, Dustin Rodrigues '12, Teddy Einstein '10 and Arolyn Conwill '10.  A hearty cheer for all of Pomona's participants!!";

China just passed the US to become the worlds biggest emitter of carbon dioxide, and it's estimated that half of the worlds new construction over the next ten years will take place in China, so it's hugely important that they do this construction in a sustainable fashion.'";

Julie and her co-authors, Matthew Rashford, State University of New York at Geneseo and Jonathan Wrolstad, Winona State University presented a poster, <i>Exponential Stability of Dynamic Equations on Time Scales</i>, which they conceived at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under the direction of Allan Peterson.<br><br>Julie reports that she \"loved being able to see and talk about the work of other students from colleges all over the country and to have the experience of explaining our own work to a group of judges, most of whom knew little about our area of study.  New Orleans is also a really fun city to explore.\"";
